Stolen information about a billion people in China is being sold for 10 bitcoins

05.07.2022

The personal data of Chinese citizens that were stolen when cybersecurity was breached is now being sold by hackers for 10 bitcoins, which is $200,000.

According to Block-chain24, the police database of the city of Shanghai was affected. The reason is the damage to the security system that happened this year. As a result, people's personal data (name, place of residence, phone number, state numbers and other information) can now be bought using the personal Internet and the darknet. An offer from hacker ChinaDan is posted on the Breached.to hacker forum.

The director of the Binance cryptocurrency exchange made a statement that the exchange’s threat analysis systems were found, and the personal information of the inhabitants of the Asian state is sold on the darknet. According to him, the exchange is actively checking all the victims of this case. He also suggested that the erroneous deployment of ElasticSearch (a well-known tool by which firms search and analyze information) could serve as the reason.

According to the co-founder of the Manta Network project Kenny Lee (the project concerns web3 privacy), the crypto space may feel the consequences of this case in the future. In particular, he talked about the fact that the stolen information can be used against the users themselves. With its help, for example, phishing attacks can be carried out. Fraudsters do this in order to steal keys or illegally enter certain applications. We are talking about centralized exchanges.
